For Andreanna and her four-year-old rescue, Nora — affectionately known as “Nervous Nora” — this journey began with unexpected challenges but ultimately led them to joining the membership at Golden Dog Adventure Co. Through our community and events, Andreanna and Nora have transformed their lives and bonded in ways that they hadn’t initially thought possible.
Meeting Nervous Nora
Nora came into Andreanna’s life through a southern rescue organization. While she was told Nora had some “stranger danger” and didn’t get along well with other dogs, the reality proved to be more challenging. Not only did Nora experience significant stranger anxiety, but she also had orthopedic issues, likely contributing to her stress and reactivity. When traditional in-home training proved difficult, Andreanna and her boyfriend began an ongoing journey of working with trainers, researching dog anxiety management, and exploring Nora’s specific needs in social settings.
Finding Golden Dog Adventure Co.
Andreanna first heard about Golden Dog Adventure Co. through SniffSpot, a service offering secure dog-friendly spaces, and quickly found a welcoming community with us. By joining events that prioritized safety for reactive dogs, Andreanna felt an immediate connection. She learned about our yellow awareness ribbons — signals to others to give nervous dogs extra space — which proved invaluable in setting up successful, stress-free adventures for Nora.
Their first event was a pack adventure, followed by a social outing at a cider company. Initially planning only to attend the hike, Andreanna was reassured by our team’s awareness and accommodation of Nora’s needs and decided to stay for the social gathering. She shared her appreciation for finding a dog-centered community where everyone understood what reactive dogs need and how to interact with them respectfully.
Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence
Andreanna’s experiences at our events highlighted that a strong support system can make a world of difference. She found immense value in our advocacy for reactive dogs, including positioning Nora in her preferred walking spot at the front of the group and educating attendees on avoiding direct eye contact with her. This constant, thoughtful advocacy has allowed Andreanna and Nora to attend a variety of events, from intimate hikes to larger gatherings like the Annual Corn Maze & Halloween Pawty.
Having a community that respects her dog’s unique needs, allows Andreanna and Nora to enjoy life beyond their usual boundaries. With the support of our team and fellow members, she has transformed Nora’s world from one of isolation to one filled with enriching experiences and rewarding social interactions.
Empowering Experiences Through Community Connections
Beyond our events, Andreanna has connected with various resources through Golden Dog Adventure Co., including their dog training partner Red Pointy Dog Training. With their guidance, Andreanna has enrolled Nora in reactivity rehab programs, helping her make strides in managing her behavior in social settings. Recently, Andreanna also started working for one of our charitable partner organizations, Mary’s Dogs Rescue & Adoption, giving her a unique perspective on rescue work and the challenges of helping dogs like Nora find the right homes.
Additionally, Andreanna’s experiences have inspired her to advocate for muzzle destigmatization. She uses colorful, well-fitted basket muzzles from Muzzle Movement, which allow Nora to feel comfortable and protected while in public. This gear has also helped Andreanna feel at ease when attending outings, and she proudly shares this knowledge with others in our community.
