Jake has seen dogs arrive at class too fearful to engage, only to become eager participants after a few sessions. “By week three, they’re dragging their owner in to come search our boxes,” he said during a recent Pop-Up Talk with Golden Dog Adventure Co. “It’s really cool to watch—and I see it all the time.”
Unlike obedience-focused training or high-impact sports, scent work encourages dogs to take the lead. Handlers aren’t guiding or directing; they’re observing. “Your job is to follow your dog,” Jake explained. “They’re doing the work. It’s not about helping them find it—it’s about watching how they problem-solve.”
That independence is what makes scent work so empowering. Dogs learn that they can navigate challenges and succeed without pressure. This builds real, lasting confidence—especially for dogs who are anxious or reactive in new environments.
Scent work is also mentally tiring in a way that physical exercise often isn’t. Because dogs must focus intensely on tracking and sourcing scents, even short sessions provide deep enrichment. Jake noted that sniffing wears dogs out faster than running and can be used as a calming tool after high-energy play.
It’s also remarkably easy to get started. Jake recommends beginning with a few cardboard boxes and some smelly treats in a quiet space at home. Known as the “box game,” this simple setup introduces your dog to the concept of searching—and success comes quickly.
“You don’t need fancy gear,” he said. “It’s one of the most accessible dog sports out there. And because it’s so customizable, you can make it as easy or challenging as your dog needs.”
