MEMBER ONLY: Hike, Swim and Picnic @ Lake Kenoza and Winnekenni Castle

Members, join us for a hike, swim, and lunch in July at one of the most unique places we have ever visited in Haverhill, MA. Explore and become enchanted by the “very beautiful” (Winnekenni in Algonquin) castle overlooking beautiful Lake Kenoza.

We will begin with a short hike to a nearby pond for a swim (if the water conditions are favorable). After the dogs have played and cooled down, we will make our way back and hike part of the Dudley Porter Trail overlooking the lake to the Castle Trail where we can see the magnificent castle with its beautiful landscaping. The hike will be approximately 3-4 moles total.

Inspired by the structures and castles in England, chemist James Nichols built this castle with 35,000 cubic feet of glacial boulders to prove boulders and rocks could be used in constructing a dwelling. The castle was erected between 1873 and 1875 as a retreat home for summer time.

We will picnic on the lawn in front of the castle. Please bring a lunch for you and your dog (no glass bottles).

IS THIS EVENT GOOD FOR REACTIVE DOGS?
The trails here are wide and narrow as you approach the castle. There is room to step off if approached by another dog on leash. We have had good success with reactive dogs on these trails in the past. There is room to spread out on the trails and on the lawn of the castle as we enjoy lunch. Members, if you register and cannot attend, please cancel within 48 hours to avoid a cancellation fee of $25/person. 

DIRECTIONS/PARKING:
Lake Kenoza and Winnekenni Castle is located at 347 Kenoza Ave. in Haverhill, MA. There will be a stone sign that says Winnekenni Castle. Proceed past the first parking lot to the second parking lot after the open gate and past the big field. The lot (which is not on the park map for some reason) will be on your right. You will see our car. There are porta pottys at the very top of the hill where the castle is. The ones at the beginning of the park should also be open for the season.
