PACK ADVENTURE: Hike to Explore Orris Falls Conservation Area

ABOUT THE EVENT:
Our weekday Pack Adventures are designed for smaller groups, making them ideal for dogs who appreciate a little extra space when socializing on the trail.

Ready to blaze some new ground with us? Join the Golden Dog Adventure Co. team as we explore an exciting and lesser-traveled route at the Orris Falls Conservation Area—a trail system rich in history, geology, and rugged beauty. While we’ve hiked to Balancing Rock before, this will be our first time venturing beyond into the full loop, making this outing a true team adventure.

We’ll begin at the Emery’s Bridge Road parking lot and hike approximately 3 ish miles following a scenic route that includes Orris Falls Trail, Balancing Rock Trail, Big Bump Trail, and the River Gorge Trail—looping back to our start. Along the way, we’ll pass glacial erratics like the impressive Balancing Rock, visit the site of a 19th-century homestead and family cemetery, and explore the 90-ft. gorge of Orris Falls. There is also a seasonal 12-foot waterfall, set in a steep ravine that we will view. We hope to find some cooling off spots for the dogs as well.

This conservation area, protected by the Great Works Regional Land Trust, offers a rugged, immersive experience through wetlands, vernal pools, and wildlife habitat. The trails are known to be lightly marked in some areas, so we’ll come prepared with GPS guidance and printed maps.

After, join us for dinner and a tasting at Odd By Nature Brewing in Cape Neddick, ME, a 9 mile drive from Orris Falls. Serving craft beer and creative pub food at their outside, dog-friendly patio.

PLEASE NOTE: This hike is for dogs and people looking for a longer more challenging hike. If you’re up for a true exploratory hike around 3 ish miles with a moderate climb and a good workout, this adventure is for you. Come with a spirit of discovery and a love of the unknown—this one’s not your average trail day!

IS THIS EVENT GOOD FOR REACTIVE DOGS?
Reactive Dog Level 2-3. See our Comfort Chart for explanation. This trail may be challenging for reactive dogs, depending on their triggers. While the area is generally quiet and less trafficked than more popular spots, the trails are narrow in places with limited pull-off areas, especially near the gorge and Balancing Rock. The rocky terrain and elevation gain also mean handlers should have good control and stability. That said, if your dog is comfortable in more remote, lightly trafficked areas and you’re prepared, this hike could be a great confidence-building adventure. TRAIL RATING:
The Trail is rated as Level 2-2.5 Moderate. See an explanation of our Trail Rating System. We will hike 3 ish miles with slight inclines and some rugged terrain.

The trailhead parking lot for Orris Falls Conservation Area is located at 551 Emery’s Bridge Road in South Berwick, ME. Additional details will be emailed 24 hours prior to the adventure.

Odd By Nature Brewing is located at 1400 US Route 1, Cape Neddick, ME.

CANCELLATIONS:
If weather or covid conditions make gathering and walking unsafe, the event will be cancelled and announced in the Event section of the Facebook Group and on this Calendar page. Participants who have registered will also receive a cancellation announcement via email.
